Make Up Class from 12/9/18

It's All About that Grace!

The core of our Lutheran faith is grace.
We say "We are saved by grace through faith?"

But what does that mean? Let's break it down:

SALVATION: the act of being saved from sin and death by the love and forgiveness of God so that we are free to love other.
  • Look up John 3:17 in your student Bible and highlight the text. Read John 3:16 too. John 3:16 is a popular verse, but if we keep reading, we will see that God loves the world AND wants to save it!
  • Salvation is not just getting into heaven when we die. Salvation is becoming freed to live life today!

GRACE: the free, undeserved, unearned love and forgiveness of God.
  • Look up Ephesians 2:8-9 in your student Bible and highlight the passage.  Read the top two comments in the margins about grace on page 1923 in your student Bible
  • With Grace, it's a gift that has no strings attached. We do nothing to earn it, God has already done everything (through Jesus) to give it.
FAITH: a relationship with God that is a gift from the Holy Spirit.
  • Look up Romans 1:16-17 in your student Bible and highlight the passage. Read the top 4-6  comments in the margins corresponding with the passage on page 1853 in your student Bible.
  • Faith is not just saying you believe. Faith is about an active, ongoing, living relationship with God. This relationship is made possible through the Holy Spirit.
Watch the following video by Rev. Will Starkweather, a speaker from the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston this summer. Warning: he will be sharing about his personal experience with self-harm.

Please answer the following questions in the comment space below:
  1. What is one thing you remember from the video?
  2. What four words did Pastor Carla tell Will?
  3. Will said, "We're all recovering from something...at some time everyone of us feels broken." Where have you seen or experienced brokenness in your life or in the world?
  4. Will said, "Having my brokenness met by grace made recovery possible....Grace changes everything!" How can you share God's grace with others?

Finally, remember that no matter what you do or how you act....
You are enough.
You are loved.
By the grace of God, you are a beloved child of God. Grace changes everything.

3.When I have felt brokenness is when I failed a quiz two times in a row in the same class the same trimester.

    1. Thanks for your comments, Kyle. When you see brokenness, especially in the news, how do you respond? How do you respond as a Christian?
